Nakaima: Shinto’s View of “Time” and “Choice” — Regret Not the Past, Fear Not the Future
In Japan’s ancient tradition of Shinto, there exists a dynamic concept of time—one that can stir the soul from its very core.
It is the way of living known as “Nakaima.”
1. The Eternal “Now”
In Shinto, time is not merely a straight line.
From the distant age of the gods to an unseen future, the present moment is understood as a point where all of time is condensed.
・Past: the baton of life passed down from our ancestors
・Future: the light of hope we pass on to future generations
The point where these two intersect is Nakaima.
We are not here to regret the past, nor to live in fear of the future.
We stand at the very edge of an eternal continuum, called to ignite the brilliance of this present moment.
This is the truth of “time” as taught by Shinto.
2. Choice as Surrender to the Flow (“Manimani”)
Life is a series of choices.
We often hesitate, trying to determine which option is “correct,” and become paralyzed.
Yet the Shinto approach is strikingly pure.
The highest criterion for choice in Shinto lies in a “pure, bright, and honest heart” (kiyoki akaki naoki kokoro).
Let go, even for a moment, of self-interest and ego-driven calculation.
Like removing the “self” (ga) from the mirror (kagami), revealing the “divine” (kami),
we follow intuition with a clear and unclouded heart.
This is called “in accordance with the will of the divine” (kami no manimani).
It is not passivity or resignation.
Rather, after doing all we can, it is the ultimate active choice—to trust fully in the greater flow of nature and destiny, and to step into it without hesitation.
3. Choosing the Present Gives Rise to “Musubi”
In Shinto, the force that creates and connects all things is called “Musubi.”
When we make wholehearted choices in the state of Nakaima,
new life, new relationships, and new energies are formed.
・Stagnation is “Kegare” (defilement): fearing choice and halting time drains the spirit’s vitality
・Decision is purification: the moment we cut through hesitation and say, “Yes, I will go,” the stagnant air shifts, and a clear wind begins to flow
4. Stand Firm and Dance in This Moment
Within the vast current of energy flowing since the birth of the universe,
you stand now at its very forefront.
Even what we call “failure” is, across the long arc of time, nothing more than a process.
Affirm this moment fully. Decide with clarity.
When you do, a boundless vitality will rise from within.
You are never choosing alone.
Countless ancestors stand behind you, and the myriad deities of Shinto gently push you forward.
Now—Take That Step
Cast off the weight of the past.
Dispel the illusions of the future.
Have the courage to step into the rushing current of Nakaima.
Your choices will send new winds into the world.
With clarity, with dignity—
live this moment to its fullest.
